Home Run Totals from Sammy Sosa, Barry Bonds, and Mark McGwire
Sammy Sosa, Barry Bonds, and Mark McGwire brought excitement to the field every night with the long ball, but how will be remembered thanks to the steroid era?
Sammy Sosa had a great 18 year career while playing for the White Sox, Chicago Cubs, Baltimore Orioles, and Texas Rangers. He is best remembered for being the face of the Chicago Cubs from 1992–2004. Sosa hit a career best 66 home runs in 1988 and proceeded to surpass the 60 mark again in 1999 and 2001. Sammy went on to hit a total of 609 home runs in his career.
Barry Bonds had one of the most historic careers ever. Barry played a long 22 year career with the Pirates and Giants. He set the home run record in 2001 by hitting 73 of them and went on to hit a staggering 762 in his career. He is remembered and argued to be one of the best and scariest hitters to ever step into a batting box.
Mark McGwire had a fantastic 16 year career of his own where he went on to hit 563 home runs of his own. Mark is most remembered for being apart of the home run race in 1998 with Sammy as they were must watch baseball to see who would capture the home run crown that year. Mark went on to hit 70 in the 1998 season to capture the crown.
The game of baseball has been greatly influenced by Sosa, Bonds, and McGwire. It has since turned into a game driven by utilizing the long ball, but these three were also headline names tied together with the steroid era and some believe their names have since been tarnished forever. Will they still be remembered as Home Run Kings, or did the steroid era ruin their reputations for good?
